Maryland Green Centers & Schools
Carrie Murray Nature Center has proudly been a certified Maryland Green Center since 2020.
What is a Green Center?
Green Centers are organizations certified by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) to provide environmental education for schools, teachers and families and to promote the Maryland Green Schools program. There are currently 36 Green Centers across Maryland which are recognized by MAEOE for "their dedication to implementing environmental education, adopting best management practices, and actively engaging with the community."

Green Schools
The Maryland Green Schools program began following the passage of The Maryland Green Schools Act of 2019 legislation by the Maryland state legislature. Today, there are 654 recognized Green Schools throughout the state, or about 35% of all Maryland's schools serving over 400,000 students! MAEOE aims to bring 50% of Maryland's schools into the program by 2028.
In the words of MAEOE, Maryland Green Schools offer PreK-12th grade students opportunities to:
-
Create environmental change;
-
Practice responsible environmental stewardship;
-
Promote sustainability;
-
Raise awareness of the intersections between our environment, public health, and society;
-
And cultivate environmental literacy.
